Taunggyi, is the capital of Shan State, Myanmar. Taunggyi has an estimated population of 205,000 As of 2010,making it the fifth largest city in Myanmar (behind Mawlamyine),and is at an elevation of 4,712 feet (1,436 m) above sea level. The name Taunggyi means "big mountain" in the Burmese language, and is named after the ridge on the east of the city, part of the Shan Hills system, whose prominent high point is called Taung-chun or "The Spur."



Another interesting place to visit in Taunggyi is the Cultural Museum where cultural objects, musical instruments, traditional dresses, household and farm implements, paintings, sculptures, arts and crafts of the different national races residing in Shan State can be seen.



In Taunggyi, the capital city of the Shan State, the people celebrate the Tazaungdine festival with Kahtein (offering of monk robes) as well as the releasing up fire-balloons into the sky. Balloons in the shape of elephant, ox, horse, water-buffalo, bird, pig, fish, owl and parrot are released.



It lies on the route of the royal barge in Nyaung Shwe, Shan State (south) as one of the 84000 pagodas built by King Thiri Dhamma Thawka. It was renovated in Sakarit 721 by the Saopha of Hsiseng as he built Nyaung Shwe.                                  



Nyaung Shwe contains the main port to Inle Lake. Taunggyi hot air balloons festival is another interesting event of Myanmar. Pindaya Caves has great Buddha Images in different sizes. Kakku Pagodas are still the untouched architectures of the ancient times. Hopong and Kalaw are the other cities to visit nearby.
